Let’s say we take God up on his offer. Let’s say we take a break: stop working,
do nothing “productive”, enjoy a day of sabbath rest. The big question on our
minds? How will everything get done? Most of our lives run on the assumption that our work actually makes a difference. Because otherwise—let’s face it—we probably wouldn’t go to work, right? So, if it’s true that when we go to work, we actually accomplish something essential, it follows that when we don’t go to work, something essential won’t get accomplished. The amazing lesson of “sabbath” is this: that’s simply not true! Life goes on without us! It turns out that no one is indispensible. So, despite our self-important perception of how things really get done, sabbath is a regular reminder that it doesn’t rest on you. All of which means that you can take a sabbath—to confidently rest in him.
