There are some machines designed to run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. But human beings are not. In fact, though we might try to, we can’t. You’ve probably seen a little kid fall asleep in his spaghetti when he simply runs out of gas and just can’t hold up his little head any longer. Even as adults, we’ve all at least felt that way at times: spent, exhausted, the “I-can’t-go-on-even-one-more-step” kind of fatigue. We try to stave off the inevitable with caffeine or stimulating pursuits, but eventually we all must cave in to the primal impulse to close our eyes and temporarily abandon consciousness. That’s not a defect. It’s the way we were made. God designed us not just to run, but also to rest. He gave us more than just permission, more than a mere suggestion; he made it a command! Take a break! You really need it.
