yardstick: measuring ministry

“Everything’s bigger in Texas!”, they say, and that couldn’t be more true when it comes to churches. With less than 8% of the population, we’ve got 13% of the nation’s megachurches. Ask attenders about the size of their church and the average answer is 1170—even though half of all churches in America have less than 75! Think about some typical ways of measuring success in business and it’s mostly all about the numbers. So what about churches? Can you measure the success of ministry by the number of butts on the benches or bucks in the budget? A lot of people do. I’ve even caught myself being taken in by the lure of “the bottom line”. This week we want to apply the lessons of chip 2.0 to churches and ask ourselves, “How does God measure a ministry? What yardstick will he use to decide if our church, Fellowship Arapaho, is successful in his eyes?”
