We’ve all tasted some of life’s disappointments. People hurt us. Tragedy strikes. Our plans are blocked. It becomes obvious we will never achieve our dreams. True, some have it better than others. But usually that only adds envy to the list of our problems—because the good fortune of a handful of others just makes it clear how unlucky the rest of us really are.
In those moments when your life is “in the toilet”, when you are nearly overwhelmed with the disappointing circumstances and pains of your daily grind, that’s when you actually stand at the crossroads of discipleship, the lifelong journey of following Jesus. What you think, how you feel, what you say and do in those moments seems to be naturally dependent on your circumstances. In reality, however, it depends completely on how well you know your God.
