Sometimes the reason we don’t grasp the astounding value of forgiveness is because we haven’t yet realized the enormity of our need. But, like wayward sheep, everyone of us has strayed away. We’ve wandered off God’s reservation to follow our own paths. “No one is good—not even one. All have turned away from God; all have gone wrong.” Sound too harsh to you? Too judgmental? The Bible says that if we try to claim it isn’t so, we’re simply fooling ourselves—refusing to accept the obvious truth! But if we confess—if we admit our sins—God will surely forgive us and clean away every trace of guilt.
More often than not, somewhere deep down in the recesses of our hearts, we do realize that we have blown it big time. No one else may know about our failure, our weakness, our hidden corner of selfishness and self indulgence—but we do—and God does. We may push it aside and try to ignore it. Or, we may try to drown it out with busyness and diversion. Or, we may try to compensate for it by doing something really good, hoping that on balance we’ll come out all right.
But, in those most honest of moments, when we’re willing to stop lying to ourselves and finally face the truth, it is possible to realize that we are hopelessly guilty, corrupt beyond repair, worthy of disgrace and punishment. And, it’s at those very moments that we just might be ready to comprehend what it actually means to be forgiven. Are you ready to experience that kind of moment? Could that moment happen today?
